Meinrad to miss Christmas

Meinrad Calleja was still behind bars yesterday, after the Criminal Court of Appeal refused to take a decision on his bail application pending an appeal lodged by the Attorney General’s office.
Calleja, who has been held in preventive custody for four and a half years since he was arrested in connection with the attempted murder of the Prime Minister’s assistant, Richard Cachia Caruana, was last week granted bail by Judge Jeffrey Valencia in the First Hall of the Civil Court, but the decision was appealed by the Attorney General’s office.
The Appeal has been set for Wednesday, 27 December.
The Attorney General, Anthony Borg Barthet is expected to conduct the appeal. Drs Manuel Mallia and Ramona Frendo will appear for Calleja.
