The
Italian Institute of Culture kicks off the year with a
new calendar of events
The Italian Institute of Culture will be holding a discussion
by Giovanni Morigi on 18 January dealing with Il restauro dei
grandi bronzi all'aperto: il Perseo di Benvenuto Cellini. Giovanni
Morigi has carried out restoration projects on various archeological
remains, including decorative bronze statues at Pompei and Ercolano
and Marco Polo's house in Venezia.
Morigi is
also renowned for his work on open-air monuments, including that
of Mercurio Volante de Giambologna in Firenze and the famous Fontana
delle Tredici Cannelle, which dates back to the sixteenth century,
in Ancona. Other works of his include restoration on the dome
in Pisa. The talk will start at six in the evening at the Salone:
entrance is free.
The Italian
Institue will also be holding a Flute and Organ Concert by Antonio
Curcio and David Hoyland on Monday 22 January at St. John's Co-Cathedral
in Valletta. The concert is being organised in collaboration with
the British Council and the programme will include pieces by Vivaldi,
Handel, Telemann and Bach. The concert starts at 7pm and entrance
is free.
On Saturday
the 27th a Messa di Requiem will be held at the Mediterranean
Conference Centre in Valletta on the occasion of the hundredth
anniversary since Giuseppe Verdi's death. The National Orchestra,
directed by Mro Michael Laus, will be taking part, as well as
Emil Ivanov (Tenor), Noel Galea (Bass), Francesca Rinaldi (Soprano)
and Lorena Espina (Contralto). The concert starts at 7.30pm and
tickets can be bought from the Mediterranean Conference Centre
ticket booth.
Another concert,
the Quartetto d'Archi di Venezia, will be held on Tuesday 30 January
at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. The concert starts at 7.30pm
and tickets can be bought from the Manoel Theatre ticket booth.
