The fax machine, the Labour MP and
Daewoo
By
a political correspondent
The Rabat based, erstwhile motor cycle enthusiast and former agriculture
minister Noel Farrugia currently uses or owns the fax machine that
belonged to the defunct Daewoo company.
How and why Mr Farrugia uses or owns such a fax is a mystery.
Mr Farrugia, a Labour spokesman, has participated on some occasions
in a political chorus-chanting about the controversial Daewoo company,
a name that the MLP has repeatedly attempted to link to Finance
minister, John Dalli.
But unknown to most observers is the closeness of some Labour MPs
and figureheads to some former shareholders of Daewoo.
Indeed, only two weeks ago, John Dalli spilt the beans and accused
Alfred Sant of allowing himself to be manipulated by a businessman
who was attempting to take over the Daewoo company.
The serious accusation has never been negated by Alfred Sant who
has made it his mission to take the Finance minister to task on
the issue.
The no-nonsense minister has categorically asked the Leader of the
Opposition to come forward and clarify his accusations and be specific.
But Alfred Sant has not taken up the challenge.
For months now, the Labour press has attempted to vilify political
personalities including the Prime Minister and the Finance minister
insinuating that they turned a blind eye to financial misdemeanours
at Daewoo; an accusation that has been strongly rebutted.
More serious was the minister's assertion that the Labour spin machine
on the Daewoo affairwas being oiled by business influences.
Inside sources at the Labour party confirmed that meetings had taken
place with top Labour officials and people' who had an interest
in taking over Daewoo.
The top officials referred repeatedly to a person well-known for
his leadership ambitions in the Labour party.
