UK pork, beef, lamb and mutton imports banned

Following a recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the UK, the Department of Veterinary Services yesterday announced a ban on pork, beef, lamb and mutton from the UK. The ban is also enforced on all bi-products of the affected meats, except for tinned products.

Foot and mouth disease was discovered Monday in 27 pigs at a slaughterhouse at Little Warley, Essex, east of London.

The British Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food said the disease, which is airborne and highly infectious, had spread to a neighboring farm.

The British Food Standards Agency said the cases had no implications for the human food chain.

The European Union on Wednesday banned Britain from exporting meat, livestock and milk to the rest of the EU until 1 March following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease among pigs in England.
