Did Zeppi visit the jurors' Mellieha
hotel?
Meinrad
Calleja to appeal
Joseph Fenech, the pardoned pentito in the Meinrad Calleja drug
trial case and better known as Zeppi il-Hafi, is alleged to have
visited the hotel in Mellieha where the jurors were residing before
the verdict.
Mr Calleja was found guilty in a trial by jury last week and was
sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and a Lm30,000 fine for drugs
conspiracy and cocaine trafficking.
MaltaToday spoke to one member of the defence counsel to Meinrad
Calleja. The conversation is being reproduced hereunder:
MaltaToday:
Is it correct to say that Mr Joseph Fenech was at the hotel at Mellieha
(where the jurors were residing)?
Defence counsel:
Yes, we had a reliable source. This source, as we are told, did
not inform us only, but also talked to others and I believe that
this was also known to the Bench.
MT: Did the Bench take any steps?
DC: No, he did not.
MT: As defence counsel, did you inform the Bench?
DC: We did not need to inform him, because we were certain that
he knew of these facts.
MT: When was Joseph Fenech at the hotel?
DC: I cannot tell you the exact times but I can tell you that he
was in the hotel.
MT: What are you going to do about this?
DC: The matter will not end here.
These revelations, if followed through, may have some serious repercussions.
Joseph Fenech - a colourful, charismatic but controversial criminal
- has been the centrepiece pardoned pentito for the prosecution
in two heavily publicised cases; one involving drug trafficking
and the other involving the attempted murder of the Prime Minister's
personal assistant, Richard Cachia Caruana. Both cases involve Meinrad
Calleja.
Mr Fenech was recently also involved in the illegal importation
of spirits in a container scandal at B'Kara.
