Sacred art
Easter is the time for meditation and solemnity. As Christians we
Maltese put on a number of passion plays and exhibitions relating
to the Easter Story. This year is no exception.
The IA & A (Artists-Malta) are inviting the public to their
third exhibition dedicated to 'Sacred Art' at Bir-Mula Heritage
Museum in Cospicua. This is the effort of 39 artists, most of whom
are Maltese, however a number of foreign artists from Austria, UK,
Ireland, Denmark, Poland and Italy will also be participating. It
will be open to the public until 22 April.
After eating your hot cross buns and doing the 'seven visits', you
may wish to pop in to one or two private collections of Good Friday
statuettes that are being displayed in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza.
One of the most refined and attractive of these exhibitions is to
be found at 'Redeemer', Plot 32, Mgr. Pietru Paul Pullicino Street,
Zurrieq.
It consists of two separate collections, one of which is owned by
Dr Victor Camilleri and the other by Mr Alfred Grima. Between them
they have painstakingly put together a display of about 240 characters.
Dr. Camilleri has published a wonderfully illustrated book in which
he explains the origin of the whole project. The exhibition will
be open all day over Easter weekend.
Proceeds from the sale of this book and other donations will go
to id-Dar tal-Providenza.
MUSIC
On a less religious note, six promising musicians will be performing,
accompanied by an orchestra, at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University
of Malta. The aim of this concert is to offer new opportunities
for young musicians who have achieved a high level of performance
and are considered talented enough to perform as soloists in public.
The youngest musician is 11-year-old Gozitan, Jean Noel Attard,
who will be playing Zeitz's concerto in D major for violin. The
other soloists are Roderick Bugeja, Fiorella Camilleri, Lorna Debattista,
Stephen Dimech and Kenneth Scicluna. The accompanying orchestra
will be under the direction of Mro. Joseph Vella. The performance
starts at 7.3Opm. Entrance is free.
The Central Bank is doing its bit for charity and is holding its
annual concert at the Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference
Centre on 18 April at 7.30pm.
The concert will feature the National Orchestra under the direction
of Mro. Alan Chircop and will also include the participation of
many talented musicians, both foreign and local.
The National Orchestra will play extracts from La Traviata, The
Tales of Hoffman and the Overture from Die Fledermaus.
Free tickets will be available to the public from 16 April from
the Central Bank of Malta, Castille Place,
Valletta.
Jazz' means entirely different things to different people.
But there is no question that all who have attended the two jazz
concerts at St James Centre for Creativity would all agree that
the jazz' there was tremendous. The third concert in the series
will be performed on 4, 5 April, and will be given by the Jay Rodriguez
Trio, featuring Jay Rodriguez on the sax, flute, Reggie Washington
a.bass, e.bass, and Sylvia Cuenca drums.
EXHIBITIONS
Seven schools in the south of Malta have recently held their third
edition of the exhibition entitled Art Links. Two years ago the
unifying factor of art inspired Ms Miriam Capello, Head of the Girl's
Secondary School E. Serracino Inglott, and her staff to launch the
idea of linking a number of schools through art. This year the exhibition
was held at the St Joseph Junior Lyceum, Paola. Unfortunately, I
missed the exhibition which was held between 3 and 5 April, however
I suggest you visit their website: www.artlinks2001.cjb.net. It
is highly informative and educational it is evident that much effort
has gone into it.
Dance
A 30-minute documentary about the making of
Mermaids from the Blue Lagoon' by the Olivia Dow School of
Russian Ballet is being aired on Super One TV on Easter Sunday at
8am, followed by the actual ballet at 2.45pm.
theatre
The auditions for MADC's One-Act Play Festival took place a couple
of weeks ago and the aspiring actors and direotors have been chosen.
I hear that auditions have started and I am looking forward to the
six performances which will be staged on the 26, 27, 28 and 29 April
at the clubrooms.

A History of Art Student Association (HOASA), was set up at the
University of Malta, by History of Art students in the Faculty of
Arts in December 2000. The association is open to all students of
the University of Malta as ordinary members and to the general public
as associate members. This association would be most appealing to
all ex-History of Art students and the art-loving public in general.
The objectives of this association are to increase awareness of
all artistic heritage, to create a forum both in academic and social
activities, to promote the study of history of art and create new
opportunities for students on a local
and international level.
Its many plans range from social to academic activities. The association
is also planning to set up a students' art exhibition in the very
near future.
Anyone interested in knowing more about this association, becoming
a member, or would likt to offer any kind of assistance, kindly
contact hoasa@hotmail.com or Juliet Bonnici (PRO) 09821588 or write
