Mnajdra grant sees light of day…at last

By Kurt Sansone

A report, carried by MaltaToday two weeks ago that a $50,000 grant for the restoration of Mnajdra temples had not been spent because the National Museum of Archaeology did not produce an acceptable plan, seems to have kickstarted the authorities into action.

The New York-based World Monuments Fund, which had set aside the grant in 1998, informed MaltaToday, that very recently they received a satisfactory report from the Museums Department.

Martha Flach, Manager of New Media and Public Affairs of the World Monuments Fund said the report includes measures designed to address the damage caused by recent vandalism.

She expressed her hope that the grant will soon be funding much-needed conservation work, while explaining that grants given by the WMF have strict reporting requirements.

The Mnajdra temples are listed as one of the WMF’s top 100 endangered sites. The Fund identifies rain, salt, vibrations from nearby quarries and visitors as the major culprits for the damage being done to the temple.
