Broadcasting Authority censors slang and vulgar words on TV

Super One TV’s new series, Shelly Ranner, which is transmitted every Sunday at 8.30pm has raised the Broadcasting Authority’s ire after two commonly used Maltese slang and vulgar words were aired in the first episode.

MaltaToday is informed that the BA fined Super One TV for the use of the language. However, Super One Chief Executive, Albert Marshall will be contesting the fine tomorrow, during a meeting with the BA.

Talking to MaltaToday, Mr Marshall said that the word and phrase (‘iz-zobb’ which is slang word for penis and ‘mur hudu f’sormok’ derogatory term) were used within the context of the story.

Mr Marshall who suffered censorship and a cultural backlash years back with the teleserial ‘Madonna tac-Coqqa’ insisted that he will resist the BA’s censorship at all costs because the words were a reflection of commonly used slang heard in everyday life.

The BA’s decision comes when English slang and vulgar words ‘dick’, ‘piss’, ‘poof’, ‘asshole’ and a host of others are heard regularly on cable TV and on some local stations.

Somehow, these words are overlooked while crude Maltese words continue to cause an uncontrollable reaction.
