Alex Sceberras Trigona could return to politics

He took the highly publicised decision not to stand at the 1998 elections and also made it clear that he disagreed with former prime minister Alfred Sant’s decision to go prematurely to the polls.

But today, Alex Sceberras Trigona tells MaltaToday that he doesn’t rule out standing again as a Labour party candidate.

In a wide-ranging interview, Dr Sceberras Trigona criticises Dr Sant’s handling of the 1998 crisis, saying a summer recess to cool off heads could have been a much better solution than taking a gamble and rushing off to the polls.

He also makes it clear that he disagreed with Dr Sant’s description of Mintoff as a traitor, calling it "the most abysmal statement he (Sant) ever made".

Asked whether it would take a change of leadership for him to recontest as an MLP candidate, Dr Sceberras Trigona answers that it is the "content of the party and the policies" that would be the determining factor.

"Working people need a real Labour party and that is missing, on both domestic and international issues," he says.

On the subject of the European Union, Dr Sceberras Trigona says that he believes the country is losing out because of the zigzagging caused by different governments adopting different approaches to the issue.

"It would have been better if the two parties had locked themselves up in a room and come out with a unified position on the EU," he comments.
