Press workers still in the dark over collective agreement
Most of the 150 workers at the Union Press and Union Print,
which are subsidiary companies of the General Workers Union,
are still in the dark over their collective agreement.
Many are hoping that the new deal will incorporate wage increases
after the previous agreement froze the workers pay.
Despite the firm stand the GWU takes on many issues, the unions
hierarchy does not adopt the same position where its own workers
are concerned.
It is no secret that the salaries of the Union Press/Union Print
employees are the worst in this sector in Malta.
Over the years, both GWU subsidiaries have lost many good employees
because of poor conditions and low salaries.
Now, many of the workers are afraid that the forthcoming collective
agreement will be no better.
"This is a far cry from what is preached to the workers and
to the government about a higher standard of living. Our salaries
are peanuts compared to others in almost all other work places.
It is certainly not a case of charity beginning at home,"
one GWU worker told MaltaToday.
