Falzon on rabates

Alarmist news stories announcing that subsidies on water and electricity bills are going to be eliminated as from next year were slammed by Michael Falzon, Chairman of Water Services Corporation.

"It is a case of wrong wording. The word subsidy was never used. The word ‘Sussidji’ should have read ‘Rebates’. The removal of the rebates was news way back in December 1998 and the general public has had three years during which to read the back of their bills and find it all explained there."

As from January 2002, rebates on bills will be eliminated, rebates refer to domestic bills of families consisting of four members and over. These rebates or discounts were reduced over a period of 3 years up.
