Active
role for MLP counsellers - Sant
Labours main priorities in council work are the protection
of the environment, social issues and youths. Sant pointed out
that after three years of participation in local councils, a unanimous
decision was taken to give each of the 200 Labour councillors
an active role within the Party.
Sant said that Labour believes local councils should act on behalf
of the citizens for the citizens, taking direct responsibility
for the services being offered and thus strengthening faith in
the councillors elected.
Amongst the councillors roles he listed their duty to understand
the positive aspect of the local councils and to participate in
the decisions reached within; the duty to understand the financial
rules upon which contractual expenses are based; the right to
have adequate training in order to fulfil their individual roles
properly and the knowledge that the Local Council Association
should represent local political forces in a balanced manner.
