Jimmy loses no sleep over MLP fascist candidate

The fact that an avowed fascist and right winger is standing as a candidate for Valletta in the forthcoming local council elections does not appear to be bothering Jimmy Magro, the secretary general of the Malta Labour Party.

Asked if the MLP had taken any action after MaltaToday’s revelations that Joe Meli was an outspoken admirer of fascism, Mr Magro simply chose not to respond.

Mr Meli was until some years ago a disgruntled former Nationalist activist.

Indeed PN secretary general Joe Saliba confirmed to MaltaToday that Mr Meli was secretary of the Valletta PN Sectional Committee.

From 1995 onwards, Mr Meli was never again a member of the committee, Joe Saliba told MaltaToday.

Asked if Mr Meli had ever made a request to contest the local elections on behalf of the Nationalist Party. Mr Saliba said that Mr Meli was never asked and was never approached.

This is not the first time that a disgruntled well known Nationalist has crossed over to Labour to stand as a candidate. Notary Sandro Schembri Adami was a wellknown Nationalist sympathiser but later moved to the MLP. He was elected on the MLP ticket in 1992 and 1996.

In the meantime, Mr Meli does not to have moderated his political leanings.
Unrepentant after last week’s revelation he was noted in public saluting in Sieg Heil fashion and saying to some acquaintances that he believed the Labour party was the right choice for him because it was very right wing!
