Pieces of paper fail to stop dumping at Cart rut site

Illegal dumping is still marring the face of important sites in Malta, ignoring enforcement notices issued by the Planning Authority. Over the past few days mounds of rubble have been dumped over the cart ruts in the area popularly known as ‘Tal-Wej’, limits of Mosta and Naxxar.

Asked to comment, the Planning Authority public relations officer Ivan Fenech confirmed that the authority had issued two enforcement notices regarding the illegal dumping on the said site. One had been issued in 2001, the other just earlier this year. However this action does not seem to be obtaining the desired effect.

A similar case of rubble stone being dumped on garigue land in Delimara had been reported to the PA, Mr Fenech said, when the authority took direct action and cleared the site, restoring it to its original state. The case, which occurred earlier this year, is to the credit of the Planning Authority’s prompt action, he said.

But this answer failed to address the case of the cart ruts which are an important feature of our national heritage. And perhaps stricter observance of enforcement notices could be encouraged by better supervision of such sites.
