Rubble piles up next to Borg in-Nadur
By a staff reporter
After the horrific attack on the Mnajdra two years ago wardens
were posted to guard several of Maltas sites, but several
wardens saw nothing amiss as building stones were carried past
their noses and dumped just a few metres from the 2,500BC temple
of Borg in-Nadur at Birzebbugia.
If the wardens did find something strange with the activity,
they failed to report it either to Heritage Malta or to the Superintendent
of Cultural Heritage.
The megaliths might not look awfully impressive at present,
but still attract many tourists. The history behind the temples,
which are part of a Bronze Age village, could be turned to a major
tourist attraction and, presented to the public in a professional
way, and could add thousands of Liri to the state coffers.
The Borg in-Nadur site suffered greatly in the mid-nineties
during protests carried by hunters and trappers who had opposed
the change in regulations introduced to improve bird protection
standards.
The temples were daubed in red paint and graffiti in favour
of hunting and trapping.
