UHM and the Social Pact

Mathew Vella’s comments in sub-article ‘Social Pact / ‘seuU(‘)l pakt/ n.’ of his main contribution ‘What’s the Word’ (MaltaToday Sunday 26 December ’04) have not reflected what actually happened regarding the failure by the social partners to reach a much needed Social Pact for Malta.
The document entitled ‘A Social Pact for Malta’ which was commissioned by the Union Haddiema Maghqudin was not at all elusive and impossible to achieve. Several other countries managed to reach agreements on social pacts.
Experts in the field prepared this 52-page document published in March and it was used as a base for all the discussions held at the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) level.
The failure to reach consensus should be attributed only and only to that organisation which may have had another agenda(s) to push forward, rather than reaching an agreement on a Social Pact for Malta initiated by the UHM. By now, the central administration of that particular organisation must have realised what harm has been done to our country.
