A prominent Nationalist Party member Alexis Callus yesterday resigned from his post in the Safi local council after his loutish, anti-immigrant and racist comments were exposed in the media.
Callus, who was present for the meeting organised by Nazi lover Norman Lowell in Safi last week during which xenophobic slurs were addressed towards asylum seekers, would not confirm nor deny whether he has also resigned from the Nationalist Party.
For Safi Mayor Pietru Pawl Busuttil the “shocking” news was Callus’ resignation rather than the latter’s anti-immigrant and far-right beliefs.
“I was shocked when party officials informed me that Callus was going to resign. I always worked well with him in the council and never had any problems. I was never informed of what he used to do on the internet. I am upset by what happened,” Busuttil told this newspaper yesterday.
Contacted yesterday soon after publishing his resignation letter, Callus told MaltaToday he had nothing to add to the resignation letter. “That is my position at the moment,” Callus said when asked whether he was still a PN activist.
Callus’s statement were particularly embarrassing to the PN, because he happens to be Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s nephew. He occupied the post of deputy mayor on the Safi local council and was ironically mentioned in the drafting of the Christian democratic principles of the PN’s youth movement MZPN.
Ave Camerati!
The trademark Fascist salute greets you everywhere on their websites with hundreds of virtual pages hosting messages posted by a community of ‘patriots’ writing in the archaic language of bygone deluded nationalism calling for a “Latin European Malta”.
They call themselves fascists, nationalists, Nazis, realists, libertarians, socialists, agrarian aristocrats and loads of other exotic names straight from the dead ideologies textbook; but even more bizarre is the ideological confusion that reigns among this varied group of fanatics infatuated with fascism.
Two of them call themselves Operazzjoni C3 and DVX_Jo – two nicknames which until last week did not attract much attention beyond the ephemeral medium of the internet.
Now it turns out that the former was the PN’s Deputy Mayor of Hal Safi and the latter was a Labour candidate for the Valletta local elections and a contender for the post of financial secretary within the party.
Callus, 24, called for a “Partit Nazzjonalista Veru”; Meli, 48, exalts what he calls the real right-wing party, that is the MLP.
Meli’s political convictions and his adulation for fascist dictator Mussolini was public knowledge although Labour did not bat an eyelid when he contested with the party. Former Secretary General Jimmy Magro had just refused to comment when asked about his candidature two years ago. Magro’s successor has now made it clear that Meli has no place in the party.
Both of them also exchange their views on the Italian fascist website www.ilduce.net, dedicated to Benito Mussolini, where they keep in touch with like-minded Italians and remind each other romantically of Carmelo Borg Pisani’s heroism, executed as an Italian spy in 1942.
“Unfortunately Dr Tonio Borg has become deputy prime minister of Malta and also deputy leader of the Nationalist Party,” Callus wrote last year on the Italian website, signing as Sullac – his own surname inverted. “Therefore it has become harder to get a permit to find with certainty where Carmelo Borg Pisani is (buried)”.
In the same message, Callus asks Meli – who on this site enters as DVX_malta although he openly signs with his name – whether there is any possibility to name a street after Borg Pisani.
They two also meet every 28 November for the mass in memory of Borg Pisani..
Meli has now been dismissed from the MLP since news broke of his involvement with the Nazi demonstration organised by Norman Lowell in Hal Safi last week; Callus is still in the PN, although he resigned from the Safi council yesterday.
While Meli remained steadfast to his fascist beliefs, reiterating them under his own name, Callus swiftly deleted all of his messages from the internet after realising that the exposure he got last week was not exactly positive. Indeed, he has proved to be an embarrassment to his party and to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
In one of his deleted messages – still retrievable from the internet thanks to other fascists who reproduced it elsewhere, Callus says that Turkey might be useful within Europe, only to host unwanted Africans.
“If Turkey would consume the migrants from Africa (due to their cultural similarities), I think Turkey can become the compost heap of Europe and free our country from the unwanted waste,” Callus wrote.
And even though he declared to the press that he was there only to observe the event, Callus was found out to have actually called on the immigrant haters to attend Lowell’s circus and gave them directions on the internet as to how to arrive to the otherwise tranquil village of Hal Safi by bus.
The people behind these websites are now continuously citing the recent press publicity they are receiving to indulge further in their delusions of grandeur, dreaming that their Imperium is about to materialise and that a master race will predominate.
