Floriana: A not so simple case

Kindly allow me to refer to the news report titled, ‘Labour imposes Publio in Floriana; Nigel retaliates’ by Nigel Holland (MaltaToday, February 6, 2005).
Apart from confirming all that was stated in this letter, one can now, (thanks to MaltaToday), confirm that as from December 17, 2004, (the day Publio Agius was elected Mayor), Floriana’s Mayor Agius never enjoyed the confidence of any Floriana councillor, since, as Labour Councillor Ivan Hallett had confirmed to MaltaToday, both Floriana Labour councillors were instructed to vote for Mr Agius whether they liked it or not. When speaking to Ivan Hallett in St Anne Street, Floriana just a few days after this vote was taken, I was told that he, (Hallett), was afraid that he would have been hauled in front of the Discipline and Vigilance Board and expelled from the party should he have not obeyed the party’s ruling.
That is why Agius was unethical when he called for a vote of confidence during a council sitting well knowing that two Floriana Labour Councillors had been forced by their party to vote in his favour.
I would now like to ask Malta Labour Party Secretary General Jason Micallef, (who has spoken to one of the Floriana Labour Councillors about my case since MaltaToday provided coverage about the council situation), whether Publio Agius had been granted an appointment with a Malta Labour Party leader at the Mile End headquarters prior to December 17, 2004 and whether Agius had threatened the Malta Labour Party that he would have resigned from his council seat should the Malta Labour Party have not supported his bid for Mayorship. According to this Floriana Labour Councillor, Agius had told the Malta Labour Party that, should he have resigned, the Nationalist Party would have increased a seat in the Floriana Local Council by means of a by-election.

Edward Torpiano
