I fully concur with the contents of your article on the late Alfred Buhagiar wherein you described him as an icon of the trade union movement of the 80’s. I also concur with the remarks made by John Bencini on Mr Buhagiar.
I would like, however, to set one detail straight for the record. After the teachers’ strike of 1984, Mr Buhagiar was indeed posted to a school in Paola.
On the day he returned to work, however, he was given a lift to the school by my late father, Henry Bonello. It was my father’s car (with him inside it) which was attacked and damaged. So much so that my mother is still in possession of two of the stones which were hurled at the car shattering its rear windscreen.
I have very vivid memories of my father returning from work in a very bad state of shock. That episode was one which had a great influence on me as a teenager, eventually leading me to get involved in the trade-union movement and serving on the MUT Council for four years under Mr Buhagiar's presidency.
May both of them rest in peace.
Lawrence Bonello
