Mr Eric Vella of Enemalta, like most public officials, must feel that the general public needs the obvious pointed out to it. In his reply to my letter of the 30 January regarding estimated utility bills he writes: “Bills will be issued to charge for actual or estimated consumption...” But frankly that was the whole point of my letter. While I never had nor will have any objection to paying “actual” bills I refuse to pay “estimated bills” which are nothing but guesswork since no one at Enemalta can ever gauge what I have consumed unless they visit the house.
I can be away on holiday or stuck in a hospital bed and have consumed hardly any water or electricity. And that is where the interest free loan to Enemalta comes into it, since it's rather unlikely that estimates will err to my benefit.
As for Enemalta advancing us two months credit they’re welcome to come and read my meter on a daily basis. That way they won’t have to wait two months for their money!
As for his veiled threat of penalties and suspensions, all I can say to that is “Poppycock!"
