Reference is made to libel proceedings instituted by Joe Saliba, Secretary General of the Nationalist party against the MaltaToday editor.
MaltaToday declares that the reference made in the article published on Sunday 4 July, 2004 entitled, ‘Saint Joseph the housekeeper’ was not a reference to Joe Saliba. The opinion carried a printing error which led to a misunderstanding. This error was corrected in the subsequent issue. MaltaToday is accepting as unfounded that any official of the Nationalist party passed any information to the Malta Labour party as alleged in the opinion piece. MaltaToday regrets any inconvenience caused by the publication of the opinion.
In view of this declaration, Joe Saliba is withdrawing the law suit, each party bearing its own cost.
The MaltaToday editor declares that he is accepting all the facts as declared by the officials of the Nationalist party as issued in a declaration by them, dated 27 July 2004, wherein they denied allegations made in their regard and declared that none of the them had passed information to the Malta Labour Party. The editor based his article on information from sources which he could not divulge and which subsequently resulted to be incorrect. The MaltaToday editor regrets any inconvenience caused by the publication of the article. On their part, the officials of the Nationalist party recognise that the editor of MaltaToday was misled by this source and that the editor had no intention to lie or invent stories about the Nationalist party.
In view of this declaration, the officials of the Nationalist party are withdrawing the libel suit, each party to bear its own cost.
