Appointment of legal advisors in public entities

I refer to the article written by Mr Saviour Balzan, entitled “U ejja!” published in the MaltaToday of March 20, 2005.
In his attempt to prove that only lawyers having connections with the party in government get jobs at parastatal or government-financed companies, Mr Balzan points out that Dr Mario Demarco and Dr Victor Scerri work for Malta Enterprise and Malta Industrial Parks.
Does he genuinely think their only merits are their political credentials? Apparently not. His own words are: “None of these two lawyers are incompetent or lousy and I am sure they were chosen on the basis of meritocracy rather than their political connections.” So what exactly is Mr Balzan trying to prove?
In any case, for Mr Balzan’s information Dr Mario Demarco has worked for METCO since 1990, long before his Parliamentary seat could have added to his credentials. His performance over 14 years of service persuaded Malta Enterprise to continue his engagement. As for Dr Victor Scerri, his appointment was the result of a rigorous competitive process following a public call.
