The government is not planning to extend the capping of surcharges on water and electricity bills as has been requested by the Malta Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises (GRTU). An agreement has been reached with the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association on the capping scheme announced in the budget which will mean hotels will have their bills capped at between Lm1,500 and Lm8,000 depending on the size of their bills.
The MHRA wanted the scheme extended to restaurants, but so far the government has stuck to capping only for hotels and factories as it had announced in the budget.
The GRTU wants the scheme extended to other sectors, but an investment ministry spokesperson said: “The capping has been introduced for those sectors of the economy that would otherwise be most obviously affected by the introduction of the surcharge in view of the heavy consumption inherent to the nature of their operations.”
