Google, the US-based corporation listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange, has not confirmed nor denied whether its Maltese search engine, Google.com.mt, was hacked late on Tuesday evening earlier this week, presumably by Maltese hackers.
The search button ‘fittex’ (search) encountered a momentary metamorphosis on Tuesday evening when the word on the button was changed to the standard Maltese insult of calling somebody a ‘penis in a can’.
A Google spokesperson from the California corporation however would not say whether the search engine had been hacked by perpetrators from the island. The spokesperson simply said that Google was “alerted to an error in the text on Google.com.mt and immediately updated and removed the content.”
There was no comment on whether Google had already encountered security problems with hackers or whether any extra precautions were taken following the brief encounter with the derogatory Maltese insult.
Google was established in 1998 and today employs over 3,000 workers. Since its flotation on the NASDAQ stock exchange, Google’s stock market capitalisation has risen to USD50 billion as the stock price has doubled.
