Alfred Sant’s uphill climb

Labour party leader Alfred Sant is facing another uphill climb, this time over his plans to ratify the European Union Constitution. Former Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici is on a warpath with the Labour party, scouting delegates to stand up against their own party. The MLP has rallied all its forces to counter this skirmish and this includes a ban on discussing the subject in party clubs.
The former Prime Minister enjoys respect within the hardcore of the MLP delegates who see him as an honest and altruist Labour icon.
Many of them also agree with his arguments that accepting the Constitution goes contrary to what the party had preached.
The MLP administration is spinning the news that Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici is egged on by Dom Mintoff, the old time fiery founder of the Labour party.
But Dr Mifsud Bonnici retains respect for his consistency on the issue.
One argument being promulgated by some delegates close to the Mifsud Bonnici, is that the party should wait for the outcome of the referendum in France on the European Union Constitution. They argue that France may solve the MLP’s internal squabbling over the matter by voting against the Constitution and thus shelving the EU Constitution indefinitely.
