Tigné ring road runs into trouble

Julian Manduca

Works on the ring road around Tigné point have had to slow down because part of the original fortification in the area was discovered, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Urban Development and Roads told MaltaToday.
Residents and commercial enterprises in the area have had to endure the deleterious impacts of the works including dust, noise and the blocking of the ring road.
According to the spokesperson, the find means that besides a delay certain changes will have to be made to the plans including a change in the location of the mouth of the tunnel planned to cross the road.
The discovery of the fortifications meant a “change in the configuration of the road and has raised other issues amongst which are the exact location of the mouth of the tunnel through which this road will pass, the sidewalks and other concessions in the vicinity,” the spokesperson said.
The changes have already been agreed upon: “This ministry has been monitoring all these issues throughout and is satisfied with the plans of how the construction of the tunnel and the road is to proceed.”
The construction of the ring road is one of the obligations that MIDI plc, the developers of the large Tigné and Manoel Island project entered into upon signing the deed with the government.
According to the ministry it is likely that traffic will start flowing through the ring road in early 2007.
