The legal notice that was changed so that plastic bags be subjected to eco-tax by unit rather than by weight will change once again, MaltaToday has learned.
The legal notice that introduced the six cents charge on each plastic bag this year is also leading to some confusion because of the way the law was introduced.
The legal notice reads: “Bags for the conveyance of goods of plastic excluding: bags not exceeding 26 cm in width and 40 cm in length” are subject to 6c eco-tax each. Importers and manufacturers have taken to supplying plastic non-biodegradable carrier bags that are 25cm wide and 43 cm long.
While at least one manufacturer told MaltaToday that these bags are subject to eco-contribution, no such contribution is being charged.
MaltaToday sought clarification on the matter and has learned that a change to the legal notice can be expected soon.
Minister George Pullicino re-iterated with MaltaToday that he is studying the situation, but it is the tax authorities that should be taking action should there be any abuse.
Questions about the matter put to the finance ministry last week and this remained unanswered up until the time of going to press.
