Minors found guilty of violating graves

Two young Gozitan girls were found guilty this month of violating graves earlier last week on Wednesday, 21 April. The incident was alleged to have taken place in Rabat, Gozo on 7 May 2004 at about midday.
The court took note of the fact that the accused admitted to the violation and gave the two girls time to withdraw their admission, but the girls once again admitted their guilt in a court sitting on 5 April, 2005.
When deciding on its penalty the court took into consideration the following: the circumstances of the case, the early admission of the accused, the cooperation of the accused and their clean criminal record as well as their age. One of the accused was 15 at the time and the other 16 at the time of the crime.
The court noted that the prosecution failed to give a value to the damage to what was government property, and decided that the amount should be less than Lm10. The girls were not fined but put under supervision of a probationary officer for a period of two years from the date of the sentence.
