MLP declares blackout on EU Constitution

Karl Schembri

The Malta Labour Party has declared an official blackout to preclude discussion about the European Constitution, Secretary General Jason Micallef confirmed yesterday.
Contacted following the Xarabank incident in which Labour Leader Alfred Sant threatened not to show up for the Friday programme if Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was present in the studio, Micallef said this was part of a Labour Party decision not to hold any discussions in public about the issue.
Yesterday, on the party’s radio station, MLP International Secretary Joe Mifsud said he would not discuss the EU Constitution because of a “moratorium” on the debate.
“Yes, it’s a blackout,” Micallef explained. The party’s parliamentary group took the decision not to discuss the Constitution in the open until it reaches one position, so there won’t be any public discussion for now. Isn’t that normal democracy?”
