Works at the Xghajra promenade are going on at a snail’s pace MaltaToday has discovered, so much so that a Board of Investigation has been set up to deal with the case.
Visits to the site were made on 21 March 2005 and 24 April 2005.
On the date of the first visit, only two of the team of about 10 were working and all left work by 2pm. On 24 April about 15 workers arrived promptly at 8am. Work commenced at 8.45am, at least for three of the workers with the others remaining under the shade, resting.
At about 10am when cement arrived some four workers started mixing it with sea water to prepare their mixture for plastering. These four worked for a whole hour.
At 11.45am all the workers gathered their tools and vanished, including the foreman, not to return at all that day.
Work on the project commenced in January of this year and was expected to be completed by the end of June 2005.
Minister Ninu Zammit was reported as saying that the first phase involves work on a 500-metre stretch of the Xghajra coastline, and is expected to cost between Lm180,000 and Lm200,000.
