After 73 sittings and eighteen years in court, Anthony Mifsud is still seeking justice for an infringement of human rights, which took place twenty years ago.
“I am completely frustrated by these delays. I have been waiting for justice for eighteen whole years. I cannot take this anymore,” a demoralised Anthony Mifsud told MaltaToday.
Anthony Mifsud’s case against a number of police officers who had beaten him up while he was in custody has been adjourned to the 8 November, 2005, due to the fact that the judge fell sick.
The case started in 4 May, 1987, and still remains unresolved after 18 years. Mifsud, a former prison warden, was wrongly imprisoned for three years and tortured in connection with the escape of the late Louis Bartolo from prison in 1982.
Upon being arrested Anthony Mifsud was held for five days in the depot where he was beaten and coerced into signing a statement.
Anthony Mifsud was subsequently liberated by the courts from all charges. The court itself declared that he was a victim of a frame-up. Despite years of fighting for compensation he still awaits justice in his regard to this very day.
MaltaToday was among the first to spearhead a campaign to arouse solidarity with Mr Mifsud. Anthony Mifsud has informed MaltaToday that upon a request made by the defence a number of psychiatrists were appointed by the court to examine him. These examinations were completed by October 2004 and Mifsud was hopeful that the case was reaching a conclusion.
“The court was going to hear their testimony on Tuesday. Now I will have to wait till November.”
Anthony Mifsud has to date not received a cent in compensation. “I feel abandoned by the institutions,” Mifsud said.
