I have followed Minister Tonio Borg in his muddle of putting the idea across to have abortion as part of our Constitutional Law. His excuse that this is more of a pro-life exercise than a Catholic fundamentalist attitude of his own and that of his government is sheer nonsense. If that were really the case why not include euthanasia, murder, manslaughter and the rest of these crimes in the same basket?
This fundamentalism is so evident from this government in its attitude towards divorce, in its lack of real concern on the battering of women, in its silence on paedophilia especially that committed by the clergy, in the abusive censoring of mail, and to the extent that a simple activity by the transvestites of Malta was not even given permission to present its bit of fun at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
I certainly do not blame the Catholic Church in Malta for thinking that everybody on this island is a Catholic, but I certainly blame Tonio Borg in trying to make a fundamentalist state of our country.
Why doesn’t he look around him and see the disaster he has in policing the island? Black exhaust is the order of the day in all the streets of Malta, statistics on theft are no longer published because of the unbelievable increase, the Courts of Malta are doing a disservice to the country in cases like fining Lm250 to an illegal hunting incident and even giving back the shotgun to the perpetrator, giving suspended sentences to teachers who sexually abuse their students, and do I need to go any further? Ask the general public of what they think of the Police and the Courts!
And finally, what about the mess this Minister has in his control, or the lack of it, of immigrants? He is trying to justify himself by writing in a newspaper rendering him even less credible. This is what the Minister for Home Affairs should be dealing with, not Catholic fundamentalism.
Pretty soon we will be burning witches and heretics at the stake in the squares of Malta. No wonder the Archbishop was not replaced by the Vatican. With a Home Affairs Minister like Tonio Borg, who needs bishops!
