Ghaxaq’s insignia dilemma

James Debono

The coat of arms for the locality of Hal-Ghaxaq has been officially changed from three green horizontal lines to three diagonal lines, with the coming into force of Legal Notice 158, after historical research settled the matter.
MaltaToday has learned that when the coat of arms for the locality had been designed back in 1993, there was conflicting evidence on whether the three diagonal lines should be descending from the top left corner down to the right, or vice-versa.
A silly compromise was to forgo any form of research and instead have the three lines horizontal.
Apparently, the local council never endorsed the design and after careful research the council discovered that there was enough evidence in favour of having three diagonal lines descending from left to right on the locality’s coat of arms.
Hal-Ghaxaq’s mayor Joseph Mary Abdilla confirmed that the local council itself had requested the government to change the coat of arms of the locality.
“The three green diagonal lines symbolise the countryside in our locality. Evidence dating back to 1626, shows that the coat of arms of Hal-Ghaxaq is composed of three parallel lines facing towards the right. It is true that in some representations the three vertical lines were depicted as facing towards the left but this is not the case in the majority of cases.”
