Archbishop’s stand on golf course proposal

Reference is made to the interview with Mr Anglu Xuereb carried by MaltaToday on 10 July 2005.
For the sake of his clarification, I limited myself to that part of the interview which refers to the meeting Mr Xuereb had with Archbishop Mgr Joseph Mercieca regarding the golf course proposal at Tal-Virtù.
Archbishop Mercieca would like to clarify that in his meeting with Mr Xuereb he made it abundantly clear that he had strong and serious reservations regarding the Tal-Virtù golf course proposal.
The Archbishop’s hope was that the local competent authorities would be able to evaluate properly the priorities and come to a just decision regarding this proposal. In full respect of the letter and the spirit of the Agreement signed between the Holy See and the Republic of Malta on 28 November 1991.
Mgr. Mercieca also sustained that the evaluation and decision in this particular case had to take into account, among other things, the good agricultural quality of the land, the fact that for many years it has provided the livelihood of around 200 farmers, and that these families had every right to be treated fairly.
