Congratulations to William Chetcuti on his outstanding performance in Belgrade. William is another example of what we can do with dedication, good training and good people to back you up.
Another positive aspect is that the MOC approved a special project for ‘outstanding athletes’. This is great. William will only get better now as he is a real professional and he has the right backup, and I believe next time he will get the Gold medal he deserves in the World Championships. But we need more, we need more than just special projects for ‘outstanding athletes’. We need to start when these athletes are at the beginning or at a very young age.
We cannot just rely on a parent making big sacrifices for their child to be the best they can be – we need more from the government and other sport committees. Malta has the potential to be among the best athletes.
I said it before and I will say it again. I strongly believe that we still have a sport ready to explode and impress on the international scene and that is rugby. They already have some loyal sponsors, good players and a devoted organisation, but they need more. And I challenge anybody to tell me why they should not have the same backup like the national football team has.
Formula One, not the same anymore
After a long Ferrari domination in the sport of Formula One, we finally see Schumacher being beaten by Renault and McLaren. This has added some excitement to the sport this year, but we already see a new domination from Renault taking place and I think Schumacher is just about ready to throw in the towel. But something is missing, we are not seeing the close battles like we were so lucky to see not so long ago. We all remember the fierce competition between Mansel and Senna, Senna and Prost, Schumacher and Hill, Schumacher and Villeneuve, and we must not forget Hakkinen and Schumacher. These races used to go down to the wire and the championship used to be decided not until the last race. It was very sad that Senna is not with us anymore as we had already started to see a hot battle between him and Schumacher.
A couple of weeks ago I was watching CNN and Alonso was being interviewed. He was asked why it is so important for him to win the championship, and his answer was he wanted to win it while Schumacher is still driving. But wake up and smell the coffee Alonso – this would have been a good answer if Schumacher was still in contention for the title. Alonso is very lucky that Schumacher is not at his best this year.
And I might be wrong, but I believe that all the changes in the last couple of years to the rules of Formula One were done to deliberately slow Schumacher down and finally they have succeeded, and killed the sport.
