At the Gay Pride in spirit

These weeks ago was Gay Pride Day in Malta. One might question the significance of a Pride March focusing on homophobia in the year 2005 when gay men and women can freely express themselves, and several bars on the islands gladly cater for the pink pound.
I believe in the march because I strongly feel that homophobia still exists within a sizeable section of the Maltese community. Why else would an editorial of The Sunday Times still purport that the recognition of gay partnerships by the state amounts to a threat to the family? Who is the family anyway? Aren’t we part of a family? Do not our bonds constitute a family? If there is no need to march, why else do gays still need to justify their relationships, or to justify their expression of love?
Since it was not possible for me to be on the Malta Gay Pride March, I hope that this letter will suffice to demonstrate that I was there in spirit.
