Lessons of history

I found two letters in the issue of 3 July 2005 to have been thought provoking: Franco Farrugia’s “Europe does not care about our Constitution vote” and Dr Fava’s “Civilisation’s immorality”.
History repeats itself. The pendulum of history swings one way then the other. Why do we not heed the lessons of history?
Mr Farrugia draws parallels between Malta of 1980 and now. Another comparison I would like to make is between Ireland in 1983 and Malta now. In 1983 Ireland was engaged in a heated debate on whether or not the right to life of the unborn should be enshrined in the Constitution. The country was then staunchly pro-life and was dominated by two political parties. One of these (FG Fine Gael – the Irish Christian Democrats) waffled on this fundamental issue and suffered badly at the polls which followed the referendum of 1983. Many say that FG never recovered.
In Malta of 2005 there is a fierce debate on the same issue. The population is staunchly pro-life. Our Labour party adamantly refuses to take a stand. There may be electoral consequences to this inaction. Has the MLP not learnt the lesson of history?
Dr Fava referred to what happened in the states of the 1980s. The liberal elite will not continue to have its way for long. The pendulum of history swung the opposite way in the States and the same should be happening in Europe. Dr Fava is not impressed by Zapatero’s confrontational style and his fierce liberal agenda.
Unlike Mr Farrugia I think that Malta can make a difference. That is another lesson of history. If we adopt the right to life of the unborn into our Constitution we would be sending a signal in the right direction to the rest of Europe.
