Maurice Agius dies

The death of Union Haddiema Maghqudin’s first secretary general, Maurice Agius was announced yesterday to the dismay of trade unionists, who have witnessed the second loss of a fellow companion this year.
Maurice Agius occupied the post for 32 years, until 1998 when he was appointed Honorary President for life. Present Secretary General Gejtu Vella remembers Agius as “a trade unionist of principle, determination and one who always defended workers’ interests in every circumstance.”
Agius’ death comes months after the demise of CMTU president and long-standing unionist Alfred Buhagiar.
“Workers have lost a man who gave his all for their movement. He should always be remembered for the great contribution that he gave to the trade Union’s cause,” GWU’s Secretary General Tony Zarb said.
CMTU President John Bencini described him as a “dignified person.”
Maurice Agius is mourned by his wife Mary, their two children Sandra and Jacqueline and their families. The funeral will take place tomorrow in St Lawrence Church in Birgu at 8.30 am. The UHM offices will be closed for mourning.
