It is bad enough when an ambulance is involved in a traffic accident, but when onlookers saw two ambulances crashing in Tal-Pietà, images of dying patients needing to be rushed to hospital flooded their minds.
As the driver of a Fiat Ducato ambulance (GVN 036) hit the rear of his colleague’s Ford Transit ambulance (GVN 381) last Wednesday evening in Triq Patri Vincenz Portelli, just a few metres away from the PN club, people living in the vicinity were already contemplating calling for a third ambulance.
“I thought they were on duty carrying patients to hospital,” an eyewitness said.
But the drivers’ relaxed approach to the problem soon made them realise this was no emergency.
“The drivers came out and started talking to each other casually while a police officer who stopped by (GVP 137) got an inch tape to take down the necessary measurements,” the eyewitness said. “They almost seemed cheerful.”
Luckily, there were neither passengers awaiting resuscitation nor medical staff on board.
