A Libyan national detained at the Corradino prison’s maximum security division was found hanging in his cell as he tried committing suicide last week, MaltaToday has confirmed.
The attempt which happened on the night of 24 August was kept under wraps by the authorities but prison sources said the man convicted for theft was saved by prison wardens in the nick of time as he was found hanging with a bed sheet.
Now transferred to Mount Carmel Hospital for psychiatric supervision, the inmate is in stable condition according to prison director Sandro Gatt.
“He was never in danger,” he said, contradicting unofficial reports reaching the newspaper from other prison sources.
The cell forms part of Division 6, an isolated high security block that is out of bounds even for great part of the prison staff.
Fr Mark Montebello, who heads the prison charity Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl, said his organisation could not verify anything that happened in the division.
“All I know is that prison guards saved him just in time,” Fr Montebello said. “We’re banned from entering Division 6 to work with inmates there and we’re not allowed to check their conditions.”
The prison director said: “Division 6 is a maximum security division and NGOs and other persons are not allowed in for their own safety and security.”
