After attending last Monday’s public meeting organised by MEPA at the Jerma Palace hotel on the subject of upgrading the Sant Antnin waste plant, the people living there tried to listen to what Wasteserv chief executive Ing. Chris Ciantar and Ing. Mario Schembri had in their minds.
The visual presentation was so pretty one could not know whether it was some new 5-star hotel or a waste treatment plant (so from that point of view he has done a good marketing job). What Ing. Chris Ciantar did not explain was how his Wasteserv has been running the plant at Marsaskala for the last three years and the smell is something terrible for residents and the surrounding neighbourhood.
There were years (1997-98) when the smell was very ineffective and now with all our expertise, (Wasteserv’s), the problem became worse, again like had happened in 1993. Do not forget dear reader, we are discussing the same place at different time intervals.
How you can imagine this small village which is a tourist attraction, with tourists seeing these special vehicles called scammels passing one by one going to this 5-star hotel (waste treatment plant) with a very unattractive smell?
We the residents know how this plant was built, based on wrong decisions taken in the past. Now it is ridiculous to persist in making mistakes. Worse still is the decision to demolish the current plant and build a bigger one. Why has Wasteserv not given any guarantee to the residents?
Another point I need an answer about is how the Church commission came to say it is in favour of the upgrade. Why did they not meet the Marsaskala residents, or are they not so important now? Who conducted this report and how has this atomic bomb come to be placed near the Razzett tal Hbiberija – a centre with a great heart for people with special needs?
Now this monster project in Marsaskala is in the hands of MEPA. Is Marsascala being ruined once and for all or can they save this small village? We’ll have to wait and see.
