Malta’s goalscorer in the 1-1 equaliser against Croatia last week has become somewhat of an internet favourite on hattrick.org, a fantasy football website which hosts internet gamers from all over the world.
Defender Steve Wellman, who plays on the website with his team ‘ahna il-Hmir’ (‘we are the donkeys’), feasted on a smorgasbord of praise from Swedish gamers after last week’s free-kick 14 minutes ahead of full-time jeopardised Croatia’s hopes of qualifying directly for the World Cup finals.
Some 54 messages of praise came in from mostly Swedish gamers, congratulating him on the goal which lost Croatia a precious three points. Sweden is competing for the first place in the same qualifying group.
Wellman’s personal guestbook received invitations from fellow gamers to visit Sweden, and other congratulatory plaudits, some verging on the hyperbole.
“I kiss your feet and raise you the skies… you’re a national hero, in Sweden!!!” one message read.
“You are GOD in Sweden! Great goal,” another read, along with other messages of exaggerated adulation asking for photos of Wellman for a statue of him to be built.
Wellman might as well start packing up for his Swedish holiday.
