In times when we are having to take heed of tragedies taking place all over the world, both natural tragedies as well as the dire consequences of war or terrorist acts - we urge the government headed by Prime Minister Gonzi to initiate discussions with the European Union. We believe that it is imperative that we are assured that should any disaster take place in our country, we would be given immediate help.
The European Union knows that even nowadays, the treaty signed by the Maltese government is not considered to be effective and so the people are not convinced that they will be provided with the necessary help. The manner, in which the clandestine immigrants issue was dealt with, is proof enough.
The tragedy that took place in New Orleans due to the hurricane teaches us how important it is to obtain this assurance of immediate help.
The committee of Front Maltin Inqumu would like to express its sorrow towards the American people, particularly those who live in Mississippi, New Orleans and Louisiana since they suffered immense loss, and deaths due to the devastating effect of the hurricane.
This was a tragedy perpetuated by nature, not by war. However the greatest global power, the Unites States of America was weak in its help towards its own citizens.
This tragedy teaches us that in order for help to be effective enough to help the wounded, women and children, it has to be speedy and immediate.
That is why a copy of this declaration will be sent to Prime Minister Gonzi, the American embassy, the European Commission and the President of Malta.
Dr. J. Zarb Adami
