Tonio Borg asked to take action over illegal hunting

BirdLife Malta has complained to Home Affairs minister Tonio Borg, Minister for Justice and Home Affairs about poor state of law enforcement of the bird protection laws.
The complaint comes days after the massacre of a flock of Flamingos. The colourful bird breeds in Sardinia and the South of France and both the Italian and French government are proud to host hundreds of these breeding birds.
In the letter, BirdLife Malta pointed out at the illegal hunting reports during both the closed and the open hunting season. “It is incredulous that, on the eve of the open season, hunters were confident that they could break the law with impunity and without fear of being apprehended.”
The Minister was told: “We are gravely concerned at the current state of affairs, to the extent that for the first time in several years we note a general deterioration in the state of bird protection law enforcement.”
BirdLife Malta called upon Minister Borg to take action to improve law enforcement by drawing up a strategy that brings about a long term improvement in as short a term as possible.
