Everybody is welcome at Naxxar

I refer to the column Primitive as regarding the Naxxar Local Council (Maltatoday 18 September).
In his haste to demean one of his numerous pet hates the editor, Saviour Balzan affirms that the present mayor ‘has laid out exaggeratedly spacious private parking slots’ next to the council (sic). This is simply not true. These bays were laid out ten years ago, long before Dr Maria Deguara became mayor of Naxxar. The fact that the slots are not reserved during the meetings of the Council proves beyond doubt that they are not being abused by the councillors. Near these bays there are others reserved for the police, for un/loading, for the doctor attending the Government Clinic and one for persons with special needs, which bay, the present council has widened to facilitate the mobility of wheel chair bound persons.
Mr Balzan states that Naxxar is shabby. All four councils have done their utmost to improve the Naxxar locality. Their efforts will bear more fruit if all residents and visitors cooperate to keep our town neat and tidy, unlike Mr Balzan who daily sneaks out his dog to water the trees in front of the Council’s offices.
It is evident that Mr Balzan is not happy with taking up residence in the heart of Naxxar. Everyone is welcome to settle in our town, but newcomers should be civil enough at least to tolerate local mores and traditions, if they have become so much alienated from all things typically Maltese that they cannot enjoy them. His referring to neighbours as morons is beneath contempt.
As is his abuse of the post of newspaper editor to wage his petty, private wars.

Salvu Sciberras
Councillor i/c of PR

Editorial note: See Saviour Balzan’s opinion
