Raus, raus! March to the houses! The Nationalists are waging their “blitz” of the century and their political squads will be storming every house on the islands.
Ten years since the PN’s independence lottery campaign featuring the controversial image of none other than Adolf Hitler supposedly enticing people to buy tickets, the Reich seems to be inspiring l-istamperija again as party functionaries are plotting what they are calling a “blitz ta’ tesserament” – an aggressive membership drive in all of the streets of Malta and Gozo.
The plan, devised last month, is to take the streets by storm starting from Hal-Safi and Msida last Saturday, 8 October. Outlined in detail in an e-mail sent to all PN local councillors by Angelito Sciberras – the assistant of Secretary General Joe Saliba – the strategy includes sending all kinds of party people to knock on people’s doors to entice them to pay or renew their membership.
Ministers, MPs, MEPs, candidates, councillors and other PN creatures will be storming the streets of all the electoral districts from 9am until noon on Saturdays.
In Sciberras’ words: “This blitz should be coordinated by the District Representative together with the Sectional Committees … Through this blitz, while reaching as many members as possible in every locality, there will also be an opportunity that our members meet MPs, MEPs, candidates and local councillors.”
The subject line of Sciberras’ email was “Blitz Tesserament”, with an attached file mapping the attack called ‘skedablitz’. In his message, he used the military term evoking Hitler’s blitzkrieg strategy six times.
A councillor who received the email told MaltaToday: “I couldn’t believe Sciberras kept using the word ‘blitz’. He made me look it up in the dictionary as I kept saying there must be another meaning for it. But the only definition for it of course is intensive, destructive attack, a bombardment. I can imagine us leaving from Dar Centrali with a panzer.”
The party functionaries will start their ‘blitz’ every two weeks, then intensifying it from 19 November with a bombardment of propaganda and door-knocking every week in different localities until 10 December, ending in Zurrieq, Haz-Zebbug, Haz-Zabbar, Hal Tarxien and St Julians.
