RCC admonished by Swede for insult, Leo Brincat claims

Matthew Vella

Labour MP Leo Brincat is standing by sources who have alleged that Malta’s permanent representative to the European Union, Richard Cachia Caruana, insulted one of his female assistants during a COREPER meeting, only to be admonished by the Swedish ambassador.
COREPER is the committee of permanent representatives in the EU which prepares the agenda for the council of ministers meetings.
Brincat’s parliamentary question was categorically denied by Foreign Affairs Minister Michael Frendo, who said neither Cachia Caruana nor the Swedish ambassador knew anything of the alleged incident. The permanent representation reaffirmed the minister’s reply when asked about the incidents.
Frendo added in his reply that whoever had informed Brincat had revealed themselves as the source of the information.
“I have taken note of the minister’s reply,” Leo Brincat told MaltaToday, “but I have checked with my sources, who stand by the original version of events as has been alleged.”
