Zammit Dimech reveals little on golf consultants

James Debono

Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech has failed to mention the names of the various independent consultants who have been commissioned by the Malta Tourism Authority on the Xaghra l-Hamra golf course, after being asked by Labour MP Carmelo Abela to name architects and consultants engaged by the government on the project.
Zammit Dimech has only mentioned ADI Consultants and Hawtree and Sons as those entities who have been involved in the environmental impact assessment and design of the golf course.
ADI are expected to receive a remuneration of Lm 10,000 for co-ordinating the EIA, while golf consultants Hawtree Ltd are expected to get Lm30,000.
But a spokesperson for the Ministry for Tourism has told MaltaToday that ADI’s Lm10,000 does not include payment for the individual surveys and reports being carried out and commissioned by MTA to different consultants.
The same spokesperson refused to state the names and the remuneration received by the same consultants: “The studies are being conducted by a number of specialists all of whom have been approved by MEPA.”
MaltaToday is informed that if the terms of reference are to be followed these individual reports alone should cost more than Lm10,000. Zammit Dimech reiterated that EIA costs would be recouped from any eventual developer for the golf course.
