In this season of the ecclesiastical year, during which for ages past it has been our firm national custom to remember our dead family members and close departed friends, the profound philosophy of the much respected and well-beloved prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, the late Cardinal Basil Hume (Westminster, London), springs frequently and forcibly to my mind.
We are human beings, and by our very nature we are to a greater or lesser extent all afraid of dying; over and above this innate instinct, by our Christian Faith and Hope we are not afraid of death itself, which in many instances comes as a relief.
We are afraid of dying, and not of being dead. O Death where is thy Sting? 1 Cor 15,55
