HSBC purchasing professional meet in Malta

Twenty two HSBC Purchasing managers from 12 different HSBC country operations across Europe gathered in Malta to share best practice on their procurement skills and processes. HSBC Malta was represented by Alex Vassallo, Bobby Engerer and Tony Micallef.
Topics included resolving common issues, negotiation, stimulating competition, contractual protection, managing supplier performance, cross-border purchasing and e-Auctions.
Local HSBC trainers delivered sessions on Team Building and on Negotiation Skills. Tony Micallef, the HSBC Contracts Manager, delivered a session on ‘Group Model Contracts’ whilst Alex Vassallo, Administration & Procurement Manager, delivered a session on ‘Supplier Spend & Category Spend Analysis’.
“Our local Purchasing Department liaises regularly with the HSBC Group Purchasing Unit. HSBC believes in the benefits of the sharing of best practices on an international scale. Although cultural differences do exist, such conferences offer an opportunity for delegates to share the knowledge and expertise they gain in one country with their colleagues in other countries. Quite often, this leads to various economic benefits,” said Martin Wilkins at HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c.
Carl Hodgkinson, Head of HSBC Purchasing for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: “Through the sharing of best practice we have been able to further enhance the purchasing network within HSBC in Europe. We chose Malta for its central, Mediterranean location, superb conference facilities, English-speaking environment, and good entertainment areas, and it was a very successful experience. We will recommend it to other HSBC Group functions.”
